A boy once played a game in which he woke up in foreign cities. Decades later, he found himself in Washington, looking for an old locomotive his father had wanted to see. There were monuments, memories, a little office absurdity, and a city glimpsed in stolen hours. Whether this is a travelogue or an old childhood game finally reaching its last turn is for the reader to decide.
